NSW Police Force Firearms Registry
The Firearms Registry’s purpose is to provide firearms and weapons licensing services to the community of New South Wales. The Firearms Registry is part of the NSW Police Force and is responsible for administering the Firearms and Prohibited Weapons legislation.
The Firearms Registry’s mission is to increase community awareness and education in relation to firearm and prohibited weapon related requirements by providing the community with information on the possession, use and safe storage of firearms and prohibited weapons.
The Firearms Registry offers a range of services, including issuing firearm licences and permits to individuals, businesses, clubs and dealers, the registration of firearms and the monitoring of compliance of the Firearms Act 1996, the Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 and associated regulations.

Firearms and the Law
The NSW Government is committed to an agreed national approach to the control of firearms. Firearms ownership and use is a privilege, which is conditional on the overriding need for public safety and all firearms licence holders must be aware of their legislative responsibilities with respect to the possession, use and safe keeping of firearms. All new applicants for a firearms licence must pass an approved firearms training and safety course in the safe handling and responsible use of a firearm.

The performance of security activities in New South Wales is governed by the Security Industry Act 1997 and Security Industry Regulation 2016.
